Merchants beware:
Two Kalama Chamber member businesses have reported that they have been hit with a credit card scam. We wanted to pass along a warning to other merchants.
The scammers are claiming that their card is "de-magnetized" and won't swipe when making an in-store purchase, so they request that the merchant manually enter their card number to complete the transaction. 30-45 days later the merchant is notified by their card company that the customer contested the charges and they will not honor it. In at least one of these cases the customer had presented positive ID that matched the card, so it was not necessarily stolen, but by contesting the charges the merchant is left without payment and the customer (along with the merchandise) is long gone. A swipe is evidently proof that the card was actually in the store for the purchase to be made and makes it harder for the customer to contest a charge. Beware of anyone trying to run a card that will not swipe on its own!

About 40 community and natural resource leaders from SW Wa gathered at 7:30 am this morning to listen to Public Lands Commissioner Hillary Franz discuss her/DNR Rural Communities Partnership Initiative and then take questions and observations/comments from the audience. A wide range of topics including invasive mud shrimp, forest lands, aquatic lands, out-of-touch environmental orgs ignoring rural obstacles, rural growth/jobs/opportunity, stifling regs. Polite and pointed discussion and good dialogue. I'm proud of our community for a good showing. Leaders included county commissioners from Pacific County, Cowlitz County, Wahkiakum County, natural resource producers from Pacific County, Mason County, Cowlitz County, and PUD & Port Managers, City Mayors, city and county administrators. I'm also proud to say the EDC stepped up its game. Great support from Grays Harbor College Riverview Education Center (thanks site manager Kent Sciamiz & Dr. Minkler, GHC President).

Here Representative Brian Blake and Senator Dean Takko get into the dialogue too.
